Matsuri, Higashiyama, Kyoto.

Matsuri, or festivals, are common occurences in Japan, particularly in the warmer months between May and October. Many are very local events, connected to a Shinto shrine or Buddhist temple, whilst others are larger and connected to the seasons, ancient tales, or larger religious festivals. This one, in Higashiyama in Kyoto, was on a small scale, covering just a neighbourhood. First in the procession came men carrying these great spear-like poles, swaying to ring the bells hanging from the top. The strain was quite visible, and on one occasion a man went down, along with his pole, almost taking out a passing car.
